not for the beginner

This was the first book I read on Dante. It is a collection of marvelous little essays, well-presented and well-written on particular aspects of the Comedy. Since it was the first thing I read, I was a little lost (Freccero makes no attempt to integrate his essays with the larger narrative and, since his purpose is to cast a spotlight on particular limited episodes to show how the fit within the whole, one can hardly blame him). This book is a bit advanced for the beginner who is probably better off withDante: A Brief History (Blackwell Brief Histories of Religion)or A Modern Reader's Guide to Dante's the Divine Comedy. I prefer Hawkins. Gallagher is more religious; Hawkins more scholarly. And of course, there is my own book that splits the difference Dante's Journey: A Field Guide to the Infernal Regions

Dan Blank has been coaching college soccer for over twenty years and served most recently as associate head coach at the University of Georgia. He is the first coach in Southeastern Conference history to lead the conference’s best defense in consecutive years at different universities (Ole Miss 2009, Georgia 2010). Soccer IQ

I am an assistant coach for an NCAA Division I women's program and also coach a boys' high school team during the winter. I bought and read Soccer iQ toward the end of the college season and decided it would be a good idea to get our high school booster club to buy copies for the varsity team. I gave them copies just before the Christmas break, assigned them to read the entire book, and told them there would be a quiz when we reconvened. Based on the quizzes I know that almost all of my players did their homework, and based on what they've said, they enjoyed the reading and got a lot out of it.

As our season winds down, here are my thoughts on this book and how it has affected our team.

For starters, at some point during the season, we've dealt with every one of the chapters. Whether it was the impossible pass or throw-ins or the toe poke, at some point or another each chapter was applicable to my team. The material in this book is very relevant and it's presented in a simple and direct way that makes it easy to remember.

My core group of players have really gained a lot out of it. I can see how the things they picked up from reading are being applied during our practices and games, which is really cool to see. But my favorite story is this one, which I've also shared with the author:

A few days ago we were heavy underdogs in our district final game. We were playing a much more talented team from a much bigger school, but we went up 2-0 on them by the middle of the first half. Shortly after our second goal, a player of mine was sent off, so we would have to play the rest of the game 10 v 11. At half-time we still led, but the score was now 2-1.

As I was trailing the players over to the spot on the field where we were going to have our halftime talk, I was trying to sort out the thoughts in my head as to what I would say to them. But then a bunch of them started saying, "Chapter 50, right, Coach? Chapter 50!" At first I had no idea what they were talking about and then one of them said, "The chapter about clock management." Then I realized they were talking about Soccer iQ. Chapter 50 is entitled Clock Management With The Lead and it provides strategies for shortening the game.

My boys are not savvy soccer players. We don't live in a soccer area and I doubt this town has produced a single college soccer player. Most of the guys on my team only play 3 months a year and I doubt any of them have ever watched a game of soccer on TV. But they had done their homework and they had remembered what they read and they went out and killed off the second half better than any high school or college team I've ever seen. It was almost surreal to watch how they milked seconds off of every single restart like they had been doing it their whole lives. They applied all of the strategies in that chapter and held on for a 2-1 win and a district championship. It's really crazy to think that one chapter (three pages) of a book had such a dramatic effect on the outcome of a playoff game.

The other big benefit I've come to realize is that because Soccer iQ has addressed so many of the `small' things, it has freed me up to focus on more big picture topics. And when I need to make a correction, a lot of those corrections have been discussed in the book so there's a quicker sense of understanding from the players.

Soccer iQ is a fantastic book for players and coaches, and it's a steal at the asking price. As I told the author, we are winning games because of this book, and that's about the best review I think anyone could hope for.

Soccer Patterns of Play for the Individual

This book is well written and contains practical soccer best practices for a player. The author breaks down common tactical situations and provides meaningful advice for them. These situations might be described as patterns of play at the individual level. I recommend this book to players at a U13 level or higher.

Fantastic book for soccer players!

A really good book. Lots of common sense advice. I read the book and gave it to my ten year old son. He loves it! He has been asking me questions to clarify some of the pointers but generally understands most of the concepts. I really like that the chapters are short and concise. My favorite is the one on using the "toe kick" with a reference to a YouTube video that brings the point home. A must for soccer players young and old.

About the Author
Mary Zimmerman is a professor of performance studies at Northwestern University. In 1998, she was the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, and in 2002, she won the Tony Award for Best Director. She has adapted-directed Metamorphoses, The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci, The Odyssey, The Arabian Nights, Eleven Rooms of Proust, and Journey to the West. Mostly recently she directed and wrote the libretto for Galileo Galilee, the new opera by Philip Glass, which premiered at the Goodman Theatre.

An excellent piece for educational theatre

I am a theatre teacher and have read several (read around 100) plays looking for a play that 1)has several significant female roles, 2) has literary merit, 3)has a story with some heart 4)has humor and 5)will stretch my actors in ways they have not worked before. Mary Zimmerman's THE ARABIAN NIGHTS has all that and more. It really is a fantastic piece built around the tale of The Arabian Nights but using stories that are not overtold. Every time I read this script I discover more and more to it. Although it has some clever notes from the original production of this play, there is PLENTY of room for new creation including an improvisational idea for a portion of the script and an allusion to modern day Iraq at the end of the play. I hope we are able to secure the rights to do this show because I am looking forward to directing this play with my students. Even if you don't produce the play, it is well worth reading.

The Arabian Nights by Mary Zimmerman

Mary Zimmerman is the writer and director of the stage play The Arabian Nights: A Play. Her creative technique is to deeply research a subject, often ancient writings or even drawings, and then to work collaboratively with her cast and designers to find the best ways to dramatize the material, creating a scrip as she moves along.

She was awarded a genius grant and well deserves it.

The resultant play, in this case, is poetic, beautiful, surprising and altogether wonderful.

A Jewel For Senses, If Only It Could Last 1000 Nights

The Arabian Nights by Mary Zimmer was one of those life's moments, that truly amazed me and opened my perception of live performance. Performed by the Manhatten Theatre Company in Mud-Town New York, the evening was a tapestry of sight and a delicacy of sound, for the author'a words were scintillating. This should be a modern classic, a precursor to her wonderous Metamorphoses, which I also had the opportunity to see in New York.

About the Author

A native of Montreal, Professor Greg N. Gregoriou obtained his joint Ph.D. in finance at the University of Quebec at Montreal which merges the resources of Montreal's four major universities McGill, Concordia, UQAM and HEC. Professor Gregoriou is Professor of Finance at State University of New York (Plattsburgh) and has taught a variety of finance courses such as Alternative Investments, International Finance, Money and Capital Markets, Portfolio Management, and Corporate Finance. He has also lectured at the University of Vermont, Universidad de Navarra and at the University of Quebec at Montreal.

Professor Gregoriou has published 50 books, 65 refereed publications in peer-reviewed journals and 24 book chapters since his arrival at SUNY Plattsburgh in August 2003. Professor Gregoriou's books have been published by McGraw-Hill, John Wiley & Sons, Elsevier-Butterworth/Heinemann, Taylor and Francis/CRC Press, Palgrave-MacMillan and Risk Books. Four of his books have been translated into Chinese and Russian. His academic articles have appeared in well-known peer-reviewed journals such as the Review of Asset Pricing Studies, Journal of Portfolio Management, Journal of Futures Markets, European Journal of Operational Research, Annals of Operations Research, Computers and Operations Research, etc.

Professor Gregoriou is the derivatives editor and editorial board member for the Journal of Asset Management as well as editorial board member for the Journal of Wealth Management, the Journal of Risk Management in Financial Institutions, Market Integrity, IEB International Journal of Finance, and the Brazilian Business Review. Professor Gregoriou's interests focus on hedge funds, funds of funds, commodity trading advisors, managed futures, venture capital and private equity. He has also been quoted several times in the New York Times, Barron's, the Financial Times of London, Le Temps (Geneva), Les Echos (Paris) and L'Observateur de Monaco. He has done consulting work for numerous clients and investment firms in Montreal. He is a part-time lecturer in finance at McGill University, an advisory member of the Markets and Services Research Centre at Edith Cowan University in Joondalup (Australia), a senior advisor to the Ferrell Asset Management Group in Singapore and a research associate with the University of Quebec at Montreal's CDP Capital Chair in Portfolio Management. He is on the advisory board of the Research Center for Operations and Productivity Management at the University of Science and Technology (Management School) in Hefei, Anhui, China.

Designed for the general reader and students of language, The Firefly Five Language Visual Dictionary responds to the needs of anyone seeking precise, correct terms for a wide range of objects. Using illustrations enables you to "see" immediately the meaning of each term.

You can use The Firefly Five Language Visual Dictionary in several ways:

By going from an idea to a word. If you are familiar with an object but do not know the correct name for it, you can look up the object in the dictionary and you will find the various parts correctly named.

By going from a word to an idea. If you want to check the meaning of a term, refer to the index where you will find the term and be directed to the appropriate illustration that defines the term.

For sheer pleasure. You can flip from one illustration to another or from one word to another, for the sole purpose of enjoying the illustrations and enriching your knowledge of the world around us.

STRUCTURE

The Firefly Five Language Visual Dictionary is divided into THEMES, outlining subjects from astronomy to sports.

More complex subjects are divided into SUB-THEMES; for example, the Animal Kingdom chapter is divided into themes including insects and arachnids, mollusks, and crustaceans.

The TITLES name the object and, at times, the chief members of a class of objects are brought together under the same SUBTITLE.

The ILLUSTRATIONS show an object, a process or a phenomenon, and the most significant details from which they are constructed. It serves as a visual definition for each of the terms presented.

TERMINOLOGY

Each word in The Firefly Five Language Visual Dictionary has been carefully chosen and verified. Sometimes different words are used to name the same object, and in these cases the word most commonly used was chosen.

Great educational tool for interpreters

This is a fabulous resource for educational interpreters working with students that use or are learning other languages other than English, including ASL. It is also a wonderful resource for sign language interpreters enabling us to see the picture of the object to give us ideas as to which classifiers to use in the interpretation as well as how to set it up as we prepare for the classroom. It is also very helpful in the tutoring environment as a picture is worth a thousand words. It is very detailed in its drawings. I spent a long time comparing different resources like this one and kept narrowing it down to this one. I am very thankful I finally purchased this book as I am pleased with it. It meets my expectations.

Get this book and put it on your coffee table. NOW!

This book kicks arse. You can browse it as well as look stuff up in it. If you just want the picture to help explain stuff it is great. For example, there are loads of shirt collars documented in this book and I find that useless but love the fact that I now have a 5 lnguage reference for them. In case I need to buy a certain type of blouse collar in spanish. Or whatever.
