Young wizards Nita and Kit face their most terrifying challenge yet: Nita's little sister, Dairine. Not only is Dairine far too smart for an eleven-year-old, she also has recently become a wizard, and worse yet, a wizard with almost limitless power. When Dairine's computerized wizard's manual glibly sends her off on her novice adventure—her Ordeal—Kit and Nita end up chasing her across the galaxy, trying to catch up with Dairine before she gets into trouble so deep that not even her brains can resuce her.

Amazon.com Review
Don't take brilliant, shrewd Dairine Callahan for just any bratty younger sibling. Impatient for adventure, knowledge, and recognition, she finds her sister Nita's wizardry manual and reads the Oath aloud. Disappointingly, nothing happens. But when her family's new computer arrives, Dairene discovers more than the standard issue system software on it and launches herself on a reckless, universe-wide, high-voltage magical conflict with the Lone Power. Diane Duane's storytelling is skillfully mythic and wittily referential; Dairine's discovery and shaping of a new form of life is wondrous. For maximum enjoyment, read So You Want To Be A Wizard and Deep Wizardry first.
From Publishers Weekly
This continuation of the escapades of teenage wizards Nita and Kit centers on Nita's little sister, Dairine, whom Nita thinks is simply too smart for her own good. But when the family PC clones itself and suggests Dairine go to New York, Nita and Kit go along as chaperones, determined to keep her out of trouble. But they're too late: Dairine has read the book of wizardry and is on her wizard's test. There's nothing that the two girls can do to help her, as she must complete the difficult and dangerous test by herself. Duane is tops in the high adventure business, and her latest offering is no exception. Deftly pairing comic and sensitive scenes, this rollicking yarn will delight readers as they watch Dairine's transformation from pesky kid sister to strong-willed heroine. Ages 10-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-- In this sequel to So You Want to Be a Wizard (1983) and Deep Wizardry (1985, both Delacorte), Duane takes her young wizards, Nita and Kit, into the farthest reaches of space. Nita's younger sister, Dairine, plunges impetuously into wizardry, propelled not by the manual Nita and Kit found so convenient, but by a computer. An experienced hacker at age 11, Dairine discovers that her family's new computer comes equipped with a software wizard's manual that enables it to copy itself, shrink to pocket size, and transport Dairine across the universe. Alternate chapters follow rescue efforts by Nita and Kit. Reunited on a distant planet, the three children, together with beings Dairine and the computer have created, confront the Lone One, the biblical Lucifer, over nothing less than the salvation of the universe. Audacious in theme as L'Engle's time trilogy (Farrar), Duane's story is a homage to the science fiction of the 1950s, particularly Heinlein. The imaginative BEMs (Bug Eyed Monsters) are drawn from this tradition, as is one of the best scenes in the book, a chase through a spaceport crowded with alien lifeforms. Although the plot keeps readers guessing, the narrative flow is interrupted by chunks of undigested information about computers and astronomy. Duane's vision never rises above the pop Jungian theology of the Star Wars films, to which she constantly refers. Recommended where readers have enjoyed the earlier books. --Margaret A. Diane Duane
By Hugh Rutledge
The first in this series than moves outside Diane Duane's familiar home ground-- it moves far outside that ground (beyond the red-shift limit of the universe.) More importantly, it is a great book about being sisters, about the border of friendship and romance, and about finding one's place in the world.

Older reader disappointed
By Barney L. Blankenship
I am an older reader who enjoyed the Harry Potter books and I thought this series might be fun to read. I was very disappointed.
On page 102 the author states, in third person narrative, that 1) the earth spins at 17,000 mph, 2) the earth travels in its orbital path at 175,000 mph and 3) that the sun travels at 115,000 mph. These are all grossly incorrect. 1) should be 1040 mph. 2) should be 67,000 mph, and 3) is 490,000 mph.
Some may consider this unimportant. But why should readers be exposed to 'facts' that seem to be just made up. Scientific facts are not trivia. On page 145 the author uses light-years as a unit of time. This is the mark of a true ignoramus.
Everything else about this book is at this level. The plot, the descriptions, the action sequences would barely get a C- in freshman English. How did this get in print?
