About trends, not people, or overall quality of life
By Carol T.
Another visually beautiful book by the Lonely Planet people. This one breaks up time into units: minute, hour, day, week, etc., and the premise is to savor every moment of life, try to do things that mean something experience-wise in a lifetime.
The book presentation is exquisite. It's a heavy-duty, coffee table book filled with beautiful imagery and layouts. Visually stunning and high quality.
But as content goes, other than the visual beauty of the final product, I felt a bit let down. What I thought (wanted) it to be was a book of encouragement to seize the day and it does that to some degree. But it also bordered on preachy (don't waste your life by not doing something exciting every minute of every day) and seemed aimed at a particular generation (definitely a younger crowd) when it could have easily been a book for everyone of any age. Timeless is always better. I look at old National Geographic magazines from the 1950s that belonged to my dad and every issue could easily be about the world today. They could take a lesson or two from National Geographic enterprise.
One thing I think they really did wrong was to list specific restaurants and establishments in various cities "not to miss." What this does is make this book dated (although I did like the page on the Negroni). They should talk about the customs and specialties of the regions without mentioning specific restaurants. All this does it make the information trendy. It should be about the people and the specialness of the location and what the larger takeaway is from the culture. It shouldn't be about a restaurant or bar that just happens to be the hot spot today. That one section really ruined the book's overall appeal for me.
Perhaps this might be a good book for a college grad who is at the stage in life where trends and excitement matter more than people do. But for a more mature crowd (over 35), this is just a pretty picture book of what the younger generation thinks is important today.

a book about how to live.
By j. sistin
this book wasn't what i expected it to be. I thought it was going to be more of a travel book of amazing waterfalls, temples, churches, forests, mountains, etc. that i had to visit before i die. While that's part of what the book is, it's also something more. It's about inspiring you to live life to the fullest, and about taking the time (wherever you are!), to stop, look, listen, and appreciate the beauty and majesty that surrounds us. it's about taking midnight strolls, looking up, down, sideways, to see things from a new direction, about listening to stillness (or the opposite of!).
Does it succeed? I'd say so. it focuses more on poetry and imagery than around espousing any particular philosophy; i'd say the narrative is pretty loose. but it poses questions and facts to get your brain thinking, it's a book that's meant to be picked up, flipped to a random page, and learn a little something about our world and possibly ourselves.
If you're looking for a bucket list of fantastic places to travel, there are better books. but if you're looking for something that's also making you think about HOW you live, you should pick this up.

Beautiful book designed to be a guidebook on living life
By Epilady
Unlike most Lonely Planet books, which are guidebooks for town, this one is designed to be more of a guide to life: savor each moment, and try to create a life of meaningful experience(s). It's a stunning book with really pretty pictures; layout is nice, and it's very visually appealing
However, it's too glossy in terms of content. The concept of the time it takes to have an experience (hour, day, week, month, year) is a little convenient - sure, it might only take a few hours to watch something, but it takes time to travel to the place to see it - and it's definitely geared towards a younger crowd. Some of the suggestions would be difficult for older folks. In addition, it elevates the LIVE NOW! concept such as the suggestion that if the reader doesn't have money to travel? Beg/borrow/steal the money - which (aside from the stealing (really, LP?) - is fine for a young kid who doesn't have a family or other responsibilities, but doesn't work for most people, nor does it help them plan for life. A life of well-lived experiences is great, but if it means couch surfing or living in a car for 40+ years, that's not super realistic, nor is it necessarily ideal. Having a family and a rewarding job can also be a lifetime experience for those who are lucky. In addition, they do a bit of the guidebook thing by listing the hotspots to go when in a particular locale, which was somewhat disappointing because hotspots are not necessarily the most awesome places to be as they often get too touristy and/or expensive, in addition to dating the book (hotspots don't always remain hotspots). More of a focus on learning about other cultures, ways of life, and learning life experience that way is far more important than being at the "best" restaurant or bar.
Still, as a book to dream by, there are some neat concepts, and the pictures are amazing.
