Intriguing social conventions and a useful guide.

I picked up a library copy to read--I have often taught a sort of business class, and was looking for examples of the importance of being aware of how etiquette can vary sharply from place to place. I found some good material to use for that class.
The book is a little dated. There is no consideration for texting and social media, which is a reminder of how recent and overwhelming the rise of Twitter and its fellows really has been.
I found the book so interesting I read the whole thing thoroughly. The writing is okay, but the material is excellent (and I hope has been revised to reflect social media). Interestingly it includes etiquette in business in the USA. Among the matters covered are using the left hand (highly offensive in some ways in some places), volume and tone of voice, gift-giving, and observing pleasantries (which Americans tend to ignore).

Don't Be an 'Ugly American!'

While I used this book as a supplemental text in my course on International Management, it is very readable and would be useful for anybody traveling beyond the U.S. borders. It goes well beyond "business" etiquette, and would be a great help to travelers in a variety of social situations that might be encountered in daily interactions when visiting foreign countries.
