About the Author
Eric Jensen is a former teacher and cofounder of SuperCamp, the nation's most innovative and largest academic enrichment program. He is the author of numerous popular books about teaching and brain-based education, including Teaching With Poverty in Mind (ASCD) and Enriching the Brain (Jossey-Bass).
Carole Snider is a former teacher and school counselor. She serves on the state governing board for Ohio school counselors, is an adjunct professor, and recently authored the graduate course, Succeeding with Students of Poverty .

Practical Strategies for Helping Students Make a U-Turn

I am an avid user of Eric Jensen's brain-based teaching and active engagement strategies. I had the privilege of attending a day-long workshop with him in Asheville, NC, in the spring of 2012, which better focused my strategy application efforts with students. Needless to say, I was excited when I found out he was releasing a new book.
In Turnaround Tools for the Teenage Brain, Jensen highlights four lifelong learning drivers: attitude, cognitive capacity, effort, and focused strategy. What I love most is the book's entire focus is on change, particularly those things over which teachers have a high degree of control when it comes to students. As evidenced in Jensen's own life and the many students who have come through the school district in which I work, teachers have the opportunity to empower students to make positive changes in mindset and behavior.
As a teacher and instructional coach who supports other teachers in their practice, I have found a wealth of practical, ready-to-use information in Jensen's newest book. I cannot wait to begin implementing these practices in my work with students and teachers. I believe the four focus areas have the potential to help students put the brakes on the behaviors racing them toward failure and make a U-turn to get back on the road to a mindset of steady, continuous improvement toward becoming the best they can be.

Always a good pump up before school starts again

I think I have read all of Jensen's books, and I have attended two conferences/training sessions with him. He is still my #1 inspiration. Nothing repeated from old books here, much supports and reinforces what I do and argue for in terms of teaching middle school. A quick and inspiring read, I put skinny sticky notes on many pages, highlighted, copied a lot from it. Always a good pump up before school starts again, my 21st year.

I've been waiting...

I preordered this book as soon as I heard about it. The adolescent brain is a fascinating topic and Jensen gives specific tools and strategies for working with middle level students. The "What You Can Do" section is especially helpful.
