Essays About Maddness

Jack Bragen. A gentleman who describes himself as "a person with mental illness," has maintained a features column On Mental Illness in the Berkeley Daily Planet since 2010. His motivation is to share with others what it is like to live with his illness while pursuing his goals of contributing to society and living a satisfying life.
This work (only available in the Kindle format) is a compilation of his published essays. The column starts out rather didactic and is told in the third person. As the reader progresses he will be aware of a shift to the first person. I found the essays much more interesting and valuable when Mr. Bragen writes from his heart. It helps me to picture myself walking `in his shoes.' The more the writings resemble a personal journal the more this reviewer found it satisfying. His descriptions of frustrations when seeking help from government bureaucracies and mental health workers are especially descriptive.
For a reader experiencing a mental illness these writings are helpful in listing resources and reducing the sense of isolation. Jack states that he has schizophrenia and suffers from delusions, which have been controlled with medication, meditation, counseling and feedback from loved ones. That he has not needed hospitalization for over 15 years is a testament to its personal efficacy and his personal incite. What he has not shared is the nature of his delusions or whether he experiences aural hallucinations. I will assume that he wishes to keep these private.
The importance of communication and trust is well illustrated by this observation.
"Being told to come out of denial causes the same anger as being told you can't do something when you actually can. . . . Being told to "take your medication" when you believe you don't really need it generates the same outrage whether or not it is accurate that you need the medication. The difference between denial and fortitude is often found in the results."
