Must-have handbook for composition teachers

As a college composition teacher of classes that are 90% African American Vernacular English speakers, I found this book extremely helpful. It is a highly accessible digest of the leading interdisciplinary scholarship on what's special about black discourse culture and why it should be understood by teachers of composition.
The book includes not only insight into the history, cultural, political, and legal, and educational issues surrounding this dialect community, but also the types of frustrations teachers tend to face if not versed in the background necessary for creating useful lesson plans for these students.
This pithy and colorful report is, admittedly, not all any teacher will need, but it is an ideal starting place that will tide you over until you have time to do more in-depth study. Mine the bibliography for its highly distinguished sources and make your reading list!
